BANDED GILA MONSTERS

BANDED GILA MONSTERS (Heloderma s. cinctum)

One of two species of venomous lizards in the world. They are very impressive and beautiful. Adults take 2-3 years to mature and go through pattern and color changes as they grow. The end result is a beautiful bright pink or pink/peach banded specimen. The animals I work with originated from washington county, Utah.

Banded Gila's are by far one of the easiest lizards to keep. Babies can be started in sweater boxes and eventually moved in either rubbermaid blanket boxes or 96 quart containers. Substrate should be Sani-Chips, aspen bedding, or paper towles. A water bowl should be present at all times. Gila's need a hot spot of 90F, with a nightime drop of 10-15 degrees. Food should be offered 2-3 times a week for juveniles. Rat pinks or pups are recommended. Adults can be fed 1-3 adults mice every 10-14 days. Good hygiene is a must for healthy animals.

Although venomous, I do not suggest handling them. Always know your specimens attitude and keep calm when working with them. A very long lived species. Plan to have Gila's around for 25-30 years! Only for serious and experienced keepers.
